What should you consider when buying Styrofoam boxes?

/ Comments 4

If you want to purchase a Styrofoam box, there are a few things to take into account to ensure you make the right choice.

  • Size:First, you should consider the size of the box. Think about what items you want to store in it and how much space you need for them. A box that is too small can damage your items, while a box that is too large can be unnecessarily bulky and inconvenient.
  • Quality:: Another important factor is the quality of the Styrofoam. Make sure it is high density and sturdy enough to withstand bumps and drops. The wall thickness of the box is also an important factor as it affects the insulation ability.
  • Brand Manufacturer:It is also advisable to pay attention to the brand and manufacturer. Choose a trusted brand that is known for its high-quality products. If you plan to use the box to ship food, make sure it is approved for contact with food.
  • Shipping Items:If you plan to use the Styrofoam box to ship delicate items, you should make sure that it is shockproof and secure. Some manufacturers also offer customized boxes that are tailored specifically to your needs. However, this is only an option if you buy in bulk, as special tools have to be manufactured to produce an individual size.
  • Intended use:Ultimately, it is important that you choose a Styrofoam box that suits your intended use and protects your items. Pay attention to the quality, size and manufacturer and you will find a box that meets your needs.

The following Styrofoam boxes are the most popular with our customers

What volume can the Styrofoam boxes carry?

If you want to buy a Styrofoam box, it is important to know how much volume it has to ensure that it is large enough for your needs. Styrofoam boxes come in different sizes and can have different volumes depending on the manufacturer and model.

  • Small boxesoften have a volume of 2 to 10 liters,
  • Medium-sized boxesbetween 11 and 25 liters, and
  • Large Styrofoam boxescan have a volume of up to 100 liters and are ideal for shipping bulky or larger items or large quantities of refrigerated goods.

It is important to remember that the volume of the box does not always correspond to its actual size. The wall thickness of the Styrofoam can affect the interior and exterior volume, so it makes sense to look at the exact dimensions before purchasing.

Why are Styrofoam boxes ideal for shipping refrigerated food?

Styrofoam boxes are an excellent choice for refrigerated shipping of food and other goods that require refrigeration. They are made of foamed polystyrene and are very light, mostly food safe (note the seller/manufacturers' item descriptions!) and CFC-free. They also provide excellent insulation and keep food and medication both cool and warm, depending on the application. Styrofoam boxes are also environmentally friendly as they can be recycled or reused. Thanks to their outstanding properties, they are used for shipping:

  • foods
  • Meat
  • Vegetables
  • pharmaceutical products
  • medication
  • Pet food

used to ensure a continuous cold chain.

Which Styrofoam boxes does a beer crate fit into?

If you need a Styrofoam box for a beer crate, it is important to choose the right size to ensure that your beer is safe, protected and cold.

A standard 20 bottle beer crate is typically 40cm x 30cm x 25cm in size and has a volume of around 30 liters. A suitable Styrofoam box should offer enough space for the beer crate and possibly ice packs or ice cubes to ensure sufficient insulation. A box with a volume of 34 liters or more can be ideal to provide enough space for the beer crate and cooling elements (ice pack/ice cubes). At Kühlakku.de there is a box that fits the standard beer crates perfectly: It is the 34 liter Styrofoam box, item number 542800. It is best to measure the beer crate you want, as they can have different dimensions. It is also important to pay attention to the thickness of the walls and bottom of the Styrofoam box to ensure they provide adequate insulation. Some manufacturers offer special beer crate Styrofoam boxes that are tailored exactly to the size of beer crates and offer optimal insulation. At Kühlakku.de we always provide the internal dimensions. You can reliably use these numbers to make the right choice.

Overall, it is important to choose a Styrofoam box that offers enough space for your beer crate and has sufficient insulation to ensure that your beer is not damaged along the way and stays cold for as long as possible.

What material are Styrofoam boxes made of?

Styrofoam boxes are made of the plastic material polystyrene, which is transformed into the well-known EPS (expanded polystyrene) through a foaming process. EPS is a light and robust material that is ideal for use as packaging material.

It is made by heating polystyrene beads, which are expanded by the release of steam to form the characteristic Styrofoam network. The resulting boxes are durable, hygienic and can be used for transporting and storing food, medical products and other delicate items.

A particularly noteworthy characteristic of EPS is its insulating properties! Inside a Styrofoam box, cold things stay cold for a long time and hot things stay warm for a long time.

Additionally, EPS is an environmentally friendly material that is recyclable and uses less energy to produce than many other plastics. When you buy Styrofoam boxes, you are also helping to reduce environmental impact.

Which Styrofoam boxes are best for transporting food?

When looking for Styrofoam boxes to store or transport food, it is important to make the right choice to ensure your food remains safe and hygienic.

A good option are Styrofoam boxes that are specifically designed for transporting food. These boxes usually have thicker walls to provide better insulation and protect the food from temperature fluctuations. All of our Styrofoam boxes have a wall thickness of at least 25mm and a bottom thickness of at least 20mm and are therefore ideal for shipping food.

It is also important to pay attention to the size of the boxes and ensure that they have enough space to conveniently store and transport the food. Boxes with a volume of around 25-30 liters are ideal for small and medium quantities of food, while larger boxes with a volume of 40 liters or more are suitable if you need to transport large quantities.

Additionally, you should also make sure that the Styrofoam boxes are free of harmful substances and are certified food-safe.

Overall, Styrofoam boxes are an excellent choice for storing and transporting food, as long as you make sure you choose a box that is specifically designed for this purpose and meets all the necessary requirements.

How long do Styrofoam boxes keep food warm or cold?

Styrofoam boxes are an excellent choice if you want to keep food or medicine cool or warm. But how long can they maintain the desired temperature?

The effectiveness of Styrofoam boxes depends on several factors, such as the temperature of the refrigerated goods, the height of the temperature gradient (temperature inside the box compared to the ambient temperature), the wall and bottom thickness and the volume of the box, the duration of transport or the storage and the level of filling inside the box.

Using ice packs or gel pads can help maintain the cold chain. The way the food is packaged also plays a role. It is important to fill the box so that there is as little air as possible in order to increase effectiveness. By paying attention to these factors, you can ensure that your food is optimally cooled or kept warm during transport or storage, keeping it fresh and safe.

If you want to keep food or drinks cold, you can use ice packs or gel pads to extend the cooling period. A well-insulated Styrofoam box can keep food cold for well over 24 hours.

If you plan to transport hot food or drinks, you should make sure that the box is completely closed and sealed to retain heat. A well-insulated Styrofoam box can keep hot food and drinks warm for 12-24 hours.

However, it is important to note that the exact amount of time a Styrofoam box maintains temperature depends on various factors and can vary. It is always advisable to check the temperature of your food or drinks regularly to ensure that they are still safe to consume. Styrofoam boxes from Kühlakku.de keep food warm for 12-24 hours and cold for 24-78 hours, depending on the outside temperature (data from in-house testing).
